Department Overview

Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation

The Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation is a major discipline of Agricultural Engineering concerned with the optimal utilization, conservation, and development of soil and water resources, as well as the planning, design, and construction of the necessary structures and facilities to create favorable environmental conditions during various stages of agricultural production. The department also addresses the structural and physical development of agricultural enterprises by implementing long-term, sustainable measures. Additionally, the design of greenhouses and animal shelters falls within the scope of the department's academic and research interests.

The department carries out educational, instructional, and research activities in two main areas: water resources (irrigation and drainage) and agricultural structures. In the field of water resources, subjects include:

* Analysis, design, and operation methods for the efficient use, improvement, and development of soil and water resources

* Water supply for irrigation

* Design of surface, sprinkler, and drip irrigation systems

* Design of agricultural drainage systems

* Land grading

* Water quality and salinity

* Land reclamation

* Hydrology and hydraulics

* Agricultural meteorology

* Soil and water conservation

* In the field of agricultural structures, the department covers:

* Design and analysis of plant production structures (greenhouses), animal shelters, and storage facilities for agricultural products

* Ensuring optimal environmental conditions in these structures

* Rural settlement planning

* Land consolidation

* The main research topics include:

* Determination of water consumption, irrigation scheduling, and water-yield relationships of various crops

* Efficient use of irrigation water and comparative studies on irrigation methods

* Mitigation of climate change impacts on soil and water resources

* Plant-environment simulation modeling

* Watershed hydrological modeling

* Development of new techniques in irrigation programming

* Use of saline and wastewater for irrigation

* Reclamation of saline and alkaline soils

* Irrigation-drainage and structural problems in greenhouses

* Determination of appropriate greenhouse types and constructions

* Automation in greenhouse climate control

* Environmental control in animal shelters

Although Türkiye possesses significant potential in terms of soil and climate resources, its location within a semi-arid climate zone, the limited availability of arable land, and concerns related to global warming necessitate a focused approach to agriculture. In addition, the widespread practice of greenhouse cultivation and the necessity of irrigation in open-field agriculture in our region highlight the importance of advancing all aspects of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation in an effective and integrated manner, especially in light of emerging technologies.

The department currently offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, and actively conducts research activities.
